Here’s my submission for the Flash Fiction From Aspiring Writers by Priceless Joy, Week of September 13th, 2016. Check out their weekly challenges!
This one was difficult for me. I had originally thought of a teenager climbing a tall cliffside in a fantasy setting to locate a gem, only to wake up from a dream really living in modern day. I enjoyed the idea because sometimes we want to feel stronger then we are, and a dream is a good way to do it. But it was too much detail for only a 175 max words.
Instead, inspired by watching “Supergirl” for the first time last night and seeing a trailer for a Playstation game called “The Last Guardian”, I came up with this generic scenario full of action with no depth to it… ugh whatever.
Either way, hope you like it and thanks for reading!

The gem hovered before their eyes. For a moment, their battle halted as a new source of power came between them.
Sweat dripped from the forehead of Acela, her breathing rough. Her body ached from her ordeal. Climbing up to the stone ruins around her, locating the Gem’s store room and fighting its shadow menacing guardian. But even from the strands of brown hair blocking her eyes, she took it all in. The dark creature, just as surprised as she was, stared at the Gem, then at her, then back at the Gem.
Like lightning, they both shot forward.
The creature was close, its dark claws brushing the carved crystal. Not close enough.
Acela grabbed hold of the gem first, with a knowing grin and glint in her eyes.
Electricity charged around her body, a gust of power flying the surprised creature back with such force that it slammed into the vine covered ruin walls.
Arm raised, power rising, she aimed for the monster. This time, she would win. She would go home.
“Got ya,” she finished.
